Gas & LPG

Commercial gas and LPG,
across two very different markets

Gas in New Zealand is really two markets wearing one word. Reticulated natural gas reaches parts of the North Island; everywhere else — and every off-network site — runs on LPG. Which one you are on changes the comparison completely, and a lot of businesses are quoted as though it does not.

Reticulated gas and LPG are not the same conversation

If your site is on the reticulated natural gas network, you are buying a metered supply on a commercial contract, and the levers are rate, term and how your consumption profile is treated. If you are on LPG — which covers the South Island and every North Island site the network does not reach — you are buying delivered product, and the levers are bulk pricing, cylinder or tank arrangements, delivery scheduling and how much of the year your usage is concentrated into.

A kitchen that burns gas hard through winter service and barely touches it in February needs a very different arrangement from one running steady year-round. Getting quoted on an annual average flattens exactly the thing that should be negotiated.

Where gas and power should be looked at together

For hospitality and food production in particular, gas and electricity are not independent decisions. Dual-fuel arrangements exist, contract dates rarely line up, and a site that renews its power in March and its gas in September spends half of every year unable to move on either without breaking something.

Part of the work is simply getting both onto a shape you can actually manage — so that when the market moves, you can move with it instead of waiting out a term.

What’s included

What a gas & lpg review covers

  • Reticulated natural gas where the network reaches, and LPG everywhere else
  • Bulk LPG arrangements for kitchens, food production and accommodation
  • Contract terms typically from 12 to 36 months, weighed against your plans for the site
  • Dual-fuel electricity and gas options where they genuinely beat separate deals
  • Seasonal usage profiles treated as seasonal rather than averaged flat

Questions

About commercial gas & lpg

Our fees, and any retailer commissions, are disclosed and agreed in writing before any switch. You will not find a charge you have not already seen written down and agreed to. If a number would surprise you later, it belongs in front of you now.

We compare commercial rates across the New Zealand market rather than selling one supplier. Where a retailer pays commission, that is disclosed in writing alongside our own fee before you sign anything — so you can see exactly who pays us what, and judge our recommendation with that in front of you.

Most Kiwi businesses are on a better plan within 7 days of engaging us, and the path from first call to signed contract is typically under two weeks. The part that takes longest is usually waiting on you, not on us.

Not to get started — a first estimate takes under two minutes and needs no bill. When you want a full written proposal we do ask for a recent bill, because a proposal has to be built on your real charges rather than on a rounded number you remembered.
