Solar is the one utility decision where the person doing the modelling usually also wants to sell you the panels. We are not installers. We model the payback against your real load profile first, and if the answer is that your roof and your usage pattern do not justify it yet, that is the answer you get.
Payback is decided by your load shape, not your roof size
The number that matters is how much of what you generate you use yourself, at the moment you generate it. A site that runs hard through the middle of the day — production, refrigeration, a busy lunch trade — consumes its own generation and gets the full value of every unit. A site whose load is concentrated in the evening exports most of what it makes and earns a buy-back rate instead, which is a materially different return.
That is why two businesses with identical roofs and identical systems can get very different payback periods, and why a quote built on annual kWh alone should be treated with suspicion.
Where storage changes the answer — and where it does not
Batteries do two separate jobs, and it is worth being clear about which one you are buying. One is shifting your own generation into the hours you actually use it. The other is protection: keeping refrigeration, tills or medical equipment alive through an outage.
The first is an economic case and has to survive the arithmetic. The second is a risk case, and for some businesses it is worth paying for even when the payback maths is unremarkable. Confusing the two is how storage gets sold on the wrong argument.
